My experience at Trident during a sub-internship in medical school really sold the program to me. Between the high acuity patients, working relationship between attendings and residents, and the knowledge base with teaching skills core faculty displayed, I always felt meaningfully engaged and supported. The Charleston area being close to the beach with a great food scene was icing on the cake.

When I'm not at the ED I enjoy spending time with my wife and daughter, cooking, fishing, playing basketball, and gaming.

Austin Bagley is originally from Wilmington, North Carolina. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience from Brigham Young University, where he also played collegiate soccer. He earned his medical degree from Campbell University before completing a preliminary year in General Surgery in Wilmington, North Carolina. Outside of medicine, Austin enjoys fishing, golfing, mowing the lawn, and spending time with his wife and two daughters.

I was drawn to Trident Medical Center because of how down-to-earth everyone was during my interview and second look. I was impressed by the supportive work culture, acuity, and quality of the training. Having lived in Charleston since 2020, I was also excited to continue to live in such a beautiful, warm, and fun place. When I am not in the hospital, I love going to the beach, taking my German shepherd Jackie on adventures, rooting for the New England Patriots, playing poker, cooking, baking sourdough, reading, and collecting vinyl records.

I chose Trident because of how supported I felt. From the interview, I could tell that the faculty is incredibly passionate about teaching and developing well-rounded emergency medicine physicians. When I’m not on shift, I enjoy spending time with my dog, Callie, powerlifting, reading, and exploring local coffee shops.

Trident offers a high-acuity learning environment with supportive attendings who are genuinely invested in resident education. Even during my interview, I was struck by the close-knit culture and strong sense of community, and I knew it was a program I wanted to be a part of. Outside of residency, I enjoy kayaking, taking my dog on walks, and exploring the vibrant downtown Charleston area.

Demario Chappell was born and raised in Hampton, GA and lived in Marietta, GA for the latter years of his childhood. He earned a bachelor's degree in Biology in FAMU and served as a tutor during his time at the institution. He earned is medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Outside of medicine, Demario enjoys participating in various activities: playing guitar, ham radio, electronics, programming, independent research, napping, playing video games with friends, running at parks, etc.

My decision to choose Trident Medical Center was truly shaped by my interview experience. It was the interview that sold me on the program. The genuine conversations with the faculty and residents, the welcoming culture, and the feeling that I had found a place where I could grow as a physician all stood out to me. My second look only strengthened that feeling. I was welcomed with open arms, treated like part of the team, and given an even clearer picture of the supportive and family oriented environment at Trident. It confirmed what I already believed, that Trident was the right place for me to start my journey in emergency medicine. Outside of medicine, I enjoy playing soccer, watching sports, and spending time outdoors.

I chose Trident because I felt that its busy community setting and high-acuity patient population would provide the ideal environment to prepare me for a career as an EM physician. During my fourth-year rotation here, it became evident that the residents, attendings, nurses, and ED staff had built a strong, collaborative culture that made every shift fun while fostering an excellent learning environment.
Outside of the emergency department, I enjoy spending time with my wife and daughter, lifting, golfing, and cooking. Charleston is an amazing city with lots to do and one of the best food scenes in the country!

I was drawn to Trident because it offers hands-on training in a high-acuity, community hospital setting. I especially liked the clinical autonomy given to residents, the 1:1 resident-to-attending ratio, and the high trauma volume. The program is close-knit, and the staff and attendings are supportive and genuinely invested in each resident’s success. Being able to practice medicine in a place like Charleston is also a huge plus.

Outside of medicine, I enjoy exploring Charleston’s amazing food scene with my wife, Annie, hitting the trails and beaches with our dogs, watching Cleveland Guardians baseball, cooking, and catching some live music.

My top priority when choosing a residency was finding a program with faculty who are both supportive and truly passionate about Emergency Medicine. I’ve found that here—the attendings are invested in each residents’ success and push us to expand our capabilities every single day. Outside of the hospital, there’s a lot to love about life in the Charleston area. It’s been a great place to live and explore with my little family.

I knew after my emergency medicine rotation at Trident that it was where I wanted to train. The high-acuity patient population, wide variety of pathology, and hands-on learning made every shift exciting, but what really stood out was the faculty. They create a supportive environment, are genuinely invested in resident education, and make coming to work enjoyable every day.

Outside of residency, I'm a big sports fan and spend my weekends cheering on the South Carolina Gamecocks and Carolina Panthers. I also love exploring everything the Charleston area has to offer, whether that's checking out new restaurants, finding a new favorite spot around town, or spending as much time as possible out on the water.
